Andrea...what happened?
I saw Toad The Wet Sprocket at Jobing.Com arena in 2008. He made the audience feel included, sang a lovely variety of music, and showed off his crazy huge range. He was chatty, funny, and had a darling woman who did a few duets and one or two solos.
This time, there was entirely too much opera (the whole first half plus the beginning of the second half). He had the conductor speak for him, and included songs that seemed completely below his range and almost awkward for him to sing ("Love Me Tender" and "New York New York"). I actually felt sorry for him because it was so awkward.
Clearly, the last quarter of the entire performance was what the audience preferred (awkward songs aside). He was called back loudly at least five times! That's when he sang the songs that are popularly connected to him and that seem to represent his 'sweet spot'. He also could offload the quartet of girl singers and the female opera singer. The black soul singer could have done ALL of their jobs!
